Anti-IgE antibody reduces symptoms in allergic asthmatics The anti-immunoglobulin-E antibody, omalizumab, effectively improves asthma control in patients whose symptoms are not eradicated by inhaled corticosteroids, according to recent research. Reduced response or compliance to corticosteroid medication can lead to continued symptoms of airway inflammation in some allergic asthmatics. It has been suggested that an inflammatory response mediated by immunoglobulin-E may increase symptoms observed in such patients. To determine whether use of omalizumab could reduce airway hyper-responsiveness asthma mould connection asthma mould connection and associated symptoms in allergic asthmatics, Dr M Sol¨r, from University Hospital, Basel, Switzerland, and colleagues from US and South African medical institutions assessed the responses of 546 patients with moderate or severe allergic asthma to either the drug or a placebo. Omalizumab was administered to around half the participants subcutaneously every two or four weeks for a period of seven months. A placebo drug was given as a control to the other group. Inhaled corticosteroid levels were maintained for the bronchial coughing asthma mould connection initial 16 weeks of the trial, and gradually reduced over the following eight weeks. For the final four weeks of the trial, steroid levels were maintained at the lowest level recommended for effective asthma control. The number of asthma exacerbations and need for corticosteroid medication were both significantly reduced in the active compound group. Over the initial 16 weeks, exacerbations fell by 58 per cent, and this figure fell to only 52 per cent when steroid usage was reduced. Use of inhaled corticosteroids also fell considerably more in the omalizumab group (83 per cent) and 43 per cent stopped using them altogether in this group compared to 19 per cent in the placebo group. The drug was well tolerated and no difference in adverse side effects was observed.
